Description

A delicious and easy-to-make snack mix known as Puppy Chow, available in both traditional and refreshing mint varieties. This recipe combines crispy cereal coated in a rich blend of melted chocolate, mint baking chips, peanut butter, butter, and vanilla, then dusted generously with powdered sugar for a sweet, crunchy treat that’s perfect for parties or anytime snacking.

Ingredients

Scale

Dry Ingredients

  • 10 cups Crispix Cereal (290 grams)
  • 3-4 cups powdered sugar (339-452 grams)

Wet Ingredients and Flavorings

  • 1 cup milk chocolate chips (170 grams, Ghirardelli recommended)
  • 1 cup Andes Creme de Menthe Baking Chips (170 grams, for mint puppy chow)
  • ½ cup creamy peanut butter (135 grams, Jif recommended)
  • 8 tablespoons unsalted butter (113 grams, 1 stick)
  • ½ teaspoon pure vanilla extract (2 grams)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the cereal: Place the Crispix cereal into a large mixing bowl and set it aside to be coated later.
  2. Melt the coating: In a medium-sized saucepan over low heat, melt together the milk chocolate chips, Andes Creme de Menthe baking chips (if making the mint variety), creamy peanut butter, and unsalted butter, stirring frequently to combine into a smooth mixture.
  3. Add vanilla: Stir in the pure vanilla extract into the melted chocolate mixture to enhance the flavors.
  4. Coat the cereal: Pour the warm chocolate-peanut butter mixture over the cereal in the large bowl and gently stir until every piece of cereal is evenly coated.
  5. Prepare powdered sugar base: Into a large plastic container with a lid, place half of the powdered sugar as the bottom layer.
  6. Add coated cereal to container: Transfer all the chocolate-coated cereal into the container on top of the powdered sugar.
  7. Top with powdered sugar: Sprinkle the remaining half of the powdered sugar over the cereal in the container and securely seal the lid.
  8. Shake to coat: Gently shake the container upside down and right side up repeatedly until the cereal is thoroughly coated with powdered sugar.
  9. Cool and dry: Spread the coated puppy chow onto waxed paper or a baking sheet and allow it to cool and dry completely before serving or storing.

Notes

  • Adjust powdered sugar quantity based on how heavily coated you prefer the puppy chow.
  • If you do not want mint flavor, omit the Andes Creme de Menthe baking chips and use just milk chocolate chips.
  • This snack is best stored in an airtight container to maintain freshness and crunchy texture.
