Ingredients
Scale
Main Ingredients
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 small onion, diced
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 12 oz lasagna noodles, cooked and drained
- 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1 cup grated Parmesan cheese, divided
- 3 cups ricotta cheese
White Sauce Ingredients
- 2 cups milk
- 4 tbsp butter
- 4 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp Italian seasoning
- Salt and pepper to taste
Garnish
- Fresh parsley, chopped (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) to prepare for baking the lasagna.
- Cook Beef Mixture: In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef and diced onion until the beef is browned and the onion is soft. Drain any excess fat, then add the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute to release its flavor.
- Make Roux: In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Whisk in the flour and cook for 1 to 2 minutes until the mixture forms a smooth roux and starts to bubble gently.
- Add Milk and Thicken Sauce: Gradually whisk in the milk while stirring constantly to prevent lumps. Continue to cook until the sauce thickens to a creamy consistency.
- Season Sauce: Remove the sauce from heat and stir in Italian seasoning, half of the grated Parmesan cheese, and salt and pepper to taste.
- Prepare Ricotta: In a separate bowl, combine ricotta cheese with a pinch of salt and pepper to season it evenly.
- Layer Sauce: Spread a thin layer of the prepared Parmesan garlic white sauce on the bottom of a baking dish to prevent sticking and add flavor.
- Assemble Lasagna Layers: Begin layering by adding cooked lasagna noodles, followed by half of the beef mixture, dollops of the seasoned ricotta cheese, a generous layer of shredded mozzarella, and some of the white sauce. Repeat these layers, finishing with a layer of sauce and the remaining mozzarella and Parmesan cheese on top.
- Bake Covered: Cover the baking dish with foil and bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes to allow the flavors to meld and the cheese to melt.
- Bake Uncovered: Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes until the top is bubbly and golden brown.
- Rest and Serve: Let the lasagna rest for 10 minutes after baking to set. Garnish with chopped fresh parsley if desired, then slice and serve.
Notes
- Make sure to drain the cooked beef well to avoid excess grease in the lasagna.
- Cook lasagna noodles just until al dente to prevent overcooking during baking.
- Feel free to substitute part of the ground beef with ground turkey or chicken for a leaner option.
- Allowing the lasagna to rest before slicing helps it hold together better for clean serving.
- Fresh parsley is optional but adds a nice color contrast and fresh flavor as garnish.
