Description

This Italian Lemon Jam is a bright and tangy preserve made from fresh lemons, sugar, and a touch of water, simmered to a thick and flavorful consistency. Perfect for spreading on toast, adding to desserts, or enhancing savory dishes, this jam captures the vibrant essence of lemons in a sweet, homemade treat.

Ingredients

Scale

Ingredients

  • 6 large lemons
  • 4 cups granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice (optional, for extra tang)

Instructions

  1. Prepare Lemons: Wash the lemons thoroughly and slice them thinly, making sure to remove any seeds to avoid bitterness in the jam.
  2. Cook Lemons: Place the lemon slices in a large pot with 1/4 cup of water. Cook over medium heat until the lemons soften, which should take about 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  3. Add Sugar and Boil: Add the 4 cups of granulated sugar to the pot and bring the mixture to a boil. Stir frequently to dissolve the sugar completely and ensure even cooking.
  4. Simmer to Thicken: Reduce the heat to low and simmer the mixture for 45 minutes to an hour. Stir frequently to prevent sticking and allow the jam to thicken to your desired consistency.
  5. Add Flavorings: For enhanced flavor, optionally stir in 1/4 teaspoon of vanilla extract or 1 tablespoon of lemon juice during the last few minutes of cooking.
  6. Test Consistency: To check if the jam is ready, place a small amount on a cold plate. If it wrinkles when pushed with your finger, the jam has reached the perfect set.
  7. Cool Slightly: Remove the pot from heat and let the jam cool slightly to make it easier to handle.
  8. Jar the Jam: Pour the hot jam into sterilized jars, seal them immediately, and allow to cool completely before storing. The jam will keep in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.

Notes

  • Use organic lemons if possible to avoid wax coating and pesticides.
  • Remove all seeds to prevent bitterness in the final jam.
  • If you prefer a smoother texture, you can blend the softened lemon slices before adding sugar.
  • Ensure jars are properly sterilized to extend shelf life.
  • Store the jam in the refrigerator and consume within 2 weeks for best freshness and safety.
  • Adjust sugar quantity based on your sweetness preference, but note that sugar also acts as a preservative.
