Description

A comforting and flavorful dish featuring cheese tortellini tossed in a rich and creamy provolone sauce with tender, browned beef steak and caramelized onions. This cheesesteak-inspired pasta combines savory beef, melted cheese, and aromatic Worcestershire sauce for a hearty meal perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

Scale

Pasta

  • 1 package (12 oz) cheese tortellini

Beef and Vegetables

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 large onion, sliced
  • 1 pound beef steak, cubed
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper

Sauce

  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 cup shredded provolone cheese

Instructions

  1. Cook Tortellini: Cook the cheese tortellini according to the package instructions until al dente. Drain well and set aside to keep warm.
  2. Caramelize Onions: Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced onion and cook, stirring occasionally, for 5-7 minutes until softened and slightly caramelized, enhancing their natural sweetness.
  3. Brown Beef: Add the cubed beef steak to the skillet with the onions. Season with salt and pepper. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the beef is browned on all sides and cooked through, about 6-8 minutes.
  4. Simmer with Broth and Worcestershire: Pour in the beef broth and Worcestershire sauce. Stir everything together and bring to a simmer. Allow the mixture to cook for 3-4 minutes so the flavors meld and the liquid reduces slightly.
  5. Add Cheese Sauce: Reduce the heat to low. Sprinkle the shredded provolone cheese over the beef mixture. Stir gently until the cheese melts completely and forms a rich, smooth sauce coating the beef and onions.
  6. Combine Tortellini and Sauce: Gently fold the cooked tortellini into the skillet, making sure each piece is thoroughly coated in the cheesy beef sauce. Heat through briefly to meld the flavors before serving.

Notes

  • For a creamier sauce, you can add a splash of milk or cream along with the cheese.
  • If provolone is not available, mozzarella or a mild cheddar can be good substitutes.
  • Feel free to add sliced bell peppers or mushrooms with the onions for extra veggies.
  • Use fresh tortellini for best texture, but frozen works well too.
  • Adjust seasoning at the end to taste, as Worcestershire sauce adds saltiness.
