Ingredients
Scale
Apples
- 2 large Granny Smith apples, peeled and cored
Pastry and Filling
- 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into small cubes
- 1/2 cup caramel sauce, plus extra for serving
Egg Wash
- 1 egg, beaten
- 1 tablespoon water
Optional
- Vanilla ice cream, for serving
Instructions
- Preheat and Prepare Baking Dish: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking dish with parchment paper to prevent sticking and ensure easy cleanup.
- Prepare Puff Pastry: Cut the thawed puff pastry sheet into 4 equal squares, which will each wrap around one apple.
- Mix Filling: In a small bowl, combine the brown sugar, granulated sugar, ground cinnamon, and nutmeg until thoroughly mixed to create a sweet and spiced filling.
- Fill Apples: Place one peeled and cored apple in the center of each pastry square; fill the hollow core of each apple with the sugar and spice mixture, add a cube of butter, and drizzle a little caramel sauce inside for extra richness.
- Wrap Apples: Carefully fold the corners of each puff pastry square over the filled apple and pinch to seal, fully enclosing the apples in pastry.
- Arrange and Apply Egg Wash: Place the wrapped apples seam-side down in the prepared baking dish. In a small bowl, beat the egg with water, then brush this egg wash over the pastry to achieve a golden, shiny finish.
- Bake: Bake the dumplings in the preheated oven for 35–40 minutes or until the puff pastry is golden brown and bubbly, indicating the apples inside are tender.
- Serve: Allow the dumplings to cool slightly before drizzling with additional caramel sauce. Serve warm, optionally topped with vanilla ice cream for an indulgent treat.
Notes
- You can substitute puff pastry with pie dough if preferred for a different texture.
- Use firm, tart apples like Granny Smith for the best balance between sweetness and tartness.
- Ensure the puff pastry remains cold before baking to maintain flakiness.
- Leftovers can be reheated gently in the oven to preserve texture.
