Description

This Beef and Broccoli Lo Mein is a quick and delicious stir-fry dish featuring tender slices of flank steak or sirloin, fresh broccoli florets, and lo mein noodles tossed in a savory homemade sauce. The dish combines the perfect balance of garlic, ginger, soy, and hoisin for authentic Asian-inspired flavors, making it an ideal meal for busy weeknights.

Ingredients

Scale

Beef and Vegetables

  • 1 lb flank steak or sirloin, thinly sliced against the grain
  • 2 cups broccoli florets (fresh or frozen)
  • 8 oz lo mein noodles (or spaghetti, if unavailable)

Sauce

  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons oyster sauce
  • 2 tablespoons hoisin sauce
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional, for heat)

Other Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon ginger, minced
  • 2 green onions, chopped (for garnish, optional)
  • 1 tablespoon sesame seeds (for garnish, optional)

Instructions

  1. Cook the Noodles: Cook the lo mein noodles according to the package instructions, then drain and set aside to cool slightly.
  2. Prepare the Broccoli: While the noodles are cooking, steam or blanch the broccoli florets in boiling water for 2-3 minutes until tender but still crisp, then drain and set aside.
  3. Make the Sauce: In a small bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, oyster sauce, hoisin sauce, rice vinegar, sesame oil, sugar, and red pepper flakes if using. Set this sauce mixture aside for later use.
  4. Cook the Beef: Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Add the sliced beef and stir-fry for 3-4 minutes until browned and cooked through. Remove the beef from the skillet and set aside to prevent overcooking.
  5. Sauté Aromatics: In the same skillet, add minced garlic and ginger, stirring quickly for about 30 seconds until fragrant, being careful not to burn them.
  6. Toss Noodles with Sauce: Add the cooked noodles into the skillet along with the prepared sauce mixture. Toss well to evenly coat the noodles in the flavorful sauce.
  7. Combine Beef and Broccoli: Add the cooked beef and broccoli florets back into the skillet and stir to combine all ingredients evenly. Allow everything to cook together for an additional 2-3 minutes until heated through and the sauce thickens slightly.
  8. Garnish and Serve: Remove from heat and garnish with chopped green onions and sesame seeds if desired. Serve hot for the best taste and texture.

Notes

  • Use thinly sliced flank steak or sirloin for tenderness. Cutting against the grain ensures the beef remains tender.
  • You can substitute lo mein noodles with spaghetti or other Asian-style noodles if unavailable.
  • Adjust the red pepper flakes according to your heat preference or omit them for a milder dish.
  • For gluten-free options, ensure that soy sauce and oyster sauce are certified gluten-free.
  • Make sure to not overcook the broccoli to retain its crunch and bright green color.
