Ingredients
Scale
Tofu and Coating
- 1 pound firm tofu, cut into 1-inch cubes
- ¾ cup cornstarch
Teriyaki Sauce
- ½ cup soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, grated
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tablespoon rice wine vinegar
- 1 tablespoon sesame oil
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
To Serve
- Cooked white rice
- Sesame seeds
- Green onion, thinly sliced
- Sriracha (optional)
Instructions
- Prepare the Tofu: Press the firm tofu to remove excess water, then cut into 1-inch cubes. Toss the tofu cubes in ¾ cup cornstarch until evenly coated, which will help achieve a crispy texture in the air fryer.
- Cook the Tofu in the Air Fryer: Preheat the air fryer to 375°F (190°C). Place the coated tofu cubes in a single layer in the air fryer basket and cook for 15 minutes, shaking the basket halfway through to ensure all sides become golden and crispy.
- Make the Teriyaki Sauce: While the tofu cooks, combine the soy sauce, brown sugar, grated ginger, minced garlic, rice wine vinegar, and sesame oil in a small saucepan. Bring to a simmer over medium heat. Mix 1 tablespoon cornstarch with a little water to create a slurry and stir it into the simmering sauce. Cook until the sauce thickens, about 2-3 minutes, then remove from heat.
- Combine and Serve: Once tofu is crispy, transfer it to a large bowl and pour the teriyaki sauce over it, tossing gently to coat the tofu cubes evenly. Serve immediately over cooked white rice, garnished with sesame seeds and sliced green onions. Add sriracha on the side for an optional spicy flavor boost.
Notes
- Pressing tofu is essential to remove moisture and help it crisp up in the air fryer.
- You can use tamari or coconut aminos instead of soy sauce for a gluten-free version.
- The cooking time may vary depending on your air fryer model; watch for golden-brown tofu cubes.
- Leftover teriyaki tofu can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheated in the air fryer or a skillet.
