Ingredients
Scale
Wet Ingredients
- 1 cup warm water (+ 2 Tablespoons)
- 1/3 cup vegetable oil
- 1 egg
Dry Ingredients
- 2 Tablespoons active dry yeast
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 3 1/2 cups bread flour
For Finishing
- Melted butter, for brushing
Instructions
- Preheat the oven. Set your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit to ensure it’s fully heated and ready for baking the rolls later.
- Activate the yeast. In a large bowl, combine 1 cup plus 2 tablespoons of warm water with the vegetable oil, active dry yeast, and sugar. Stir lightly and let the mixture rest for 5-10 minutes, allowing the yeast to activate and become frothy.
- Mix the dough. Using a stand mixer fitted with a dough hook, add the salt, egg, and 2 cups of bread flour to the yeast mixture. Mix until combined. Gradually add the remaining bread flour 1/2 cup at a time, continuing to mix. The dough should be slightly sticky but manageable.
- Shape the rolls. Lightly spray your hands with cooking spray to prevent sticking. Divide the dough into 12 even pieces and shape each into a round roll.
- Proof the dough. Place the shaped dough pieces on a lightly greased 9×13-inch baking dish. Cover loosely and let them rise for 10 minutes until slightly puffed.
- Bake the rolls. Bake the rolls in the preheated oven for about 10 minutes or until the tops turn lightly golden brown.
- Brush with butter. Remove the rolls from the oven and immediately brush the tops with melted butter for a rich, buttery finish and shine.
Notes
- Use warm water that is about 110°F to properly activate the yeast without killing it.
- If you don’t have a stand mixer, you can mix the dough by hand but knead for about 8-10 minutes until smooth.
- For softer rolls, cover them with a clean kitchen towel during the rise and baking process to retain moisture.
- These rolls are best served warm but can be stored in an airtight container for 2 days or frozen for longer storage.
- You can substitute bread flour with all-purpose flour, though bread flour yields a chewier texture.
